A working farm, not a display: clove, nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla, followed by the best lunch of the trip.

A working farm rather than a display: clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, cardamom, vanilla and turmeric, most of it growing in ways that make no sense until somebody shows you. Zanzibar was the largest clove producer in the world for most of the nineteenth century and the trees on these farms are the reason. Lunch afterwards is cooked with what grows there and is usually the best meal of the trip.
