Empakaai Crater hike

Down through cloud forest to a soda lake full of flamingos.

Empakaai is a collapsed crater on the far side of the Ngorongoro highlands, and the walk is the point: about 300 metres down through cloud forest to a soda lake on the floor, with flamingos on it in numbers that depend on the water. Ol Doinyo Lengai is visible from the rim on a clear morning, and on a very clear one so is Kilimanjaro. An armed ranger walks with you because buffalo use the forest. It is steep coming back up and the minimum age is twelve.
