Stone Town walking tour

The old quarter on foot with a guide who grew up in it, carved doors, the fort, the market and the former slave market.

A thousand years of Omani, Indian and Swahili trade compressed into a few square kilometres of alleyway, and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2000. You can walk it in a morning. Go with somebody who grew up in it, because the carved doors, the old dispensary, the fort and the former slave market make far more sense with the history attached, and the streets are genuinely difficult to navigate alone.
