Mafia Island: Whale Sharks
Five nights on the quietest island in Tanzania, timed for the whale sharks.
Mafia is what Zanzibar was thirty years ago: one road, a handful of owner-run lodges, no resorts and almost no other visitors.
From October to March juvenile whale sharks feed along the west coast, and unlike almost everywhere else they are there consistently enough to plan around. November to January is the best of it. Chole Bay, inside the marine park, has coral in better condition than anywhere else in the country.
They are wild animals and we will not promise you a sighting. What we can say is that this is the most reliable place in the region to look.
