That´s a frequently asked question that we usually get from tourist before they decides to travel to Tanzania. And I would like to say that the answer to that question is definitely yes. Compared to many other African countries Tanzania is a very peaceful and friendly country. But I have also asked myself this question many years ago when I was about to make my first trip to Tanzania.
I had a picture in my head of Africa and Tanzania which was very wrong. When I went to Tanzania I was very scared and I was asking myself many times why am I doing this? But when I reached this beautiful country all those thoughts disappeared. And my trip to Tanzania has changed my whole life. It changed my way of seeing things in a wider perspective. I absolutley fell in love with the country and it´s very welcoming and friendly people. Which made me return many times for longer and shorter periods of time.
But of course Tanzania is a very different country compared to for exampel Sweden. Both when it comes to climate and safety which can cause some problems for a tourist if you´re not prepared. You need to use some common sense and be careful. There are a few things to keep in mind when you are travelling to Tanzania:
The traffic in Tanzania is quite busy especially in the big cities. But in the past years the infrastructure has improved quite much. But be careful when you are out in the traffic. And use only trusted taxi drivers. My best advice is to let your hotel book a taxi for you. If you want to find your own taxi, make sure it´s a car with a white registration plate.
If you find a taxi driver that you like, make sure that you take the drivers phone number. It is also safe to use UBER in Tanzania. Download the app and order your car through that. This is working very good in especially Dar es Salaam. Avoid to use "piki-piki" which is motorbike taxi. They are usually involved in accidents and drive in high speed.
If you plan to go out in the evening to a restaurant for example. Make sure that you take a taxi to the restaurant and go home by taxi. Avoid to be out walking when it´s dark outside. You should also try to have as little things with you as possible. Put your money and mobile phone somewhere where it´s safe. Don´t have a purse hanging on your shoulder. It can easily be taken by pick pockets.
Tanzania is a tropical country with high temperatures and high humidity. Which creates a pefect enviroment for insects and some diseases. Therefore make sure that you talk to your health provider before your trip and make sure that you get all the neccessary vaccinations that is needed for your safety. Do always use inects reppellant when you go out in the evening and sleep with a mosquito net. Preferly in a room with a fan or air condition.
The mosquitos that are spreading Malaria are especially active during nightime.
Do not drink the water from the tap. Only drink bottled water. And make sure that it has not been opened before when you buy it.
Also make sure that you drink enough fluid. It can be smart to not only drink water in the heat since you loose salt and sugar when you sweat. Therefore you can enjoy a soda or two per day.
Tanzania is country where they use mostly cash. So you are probably going to visit an ATM several times for withdrawing money. Do never withdraw money in the evening and do never walk around with a big amount of money. When you withdraw money go to an ATM where you feel safe.
It might sound like many things to think about. But if you just keep this in mind you will probably have a safe and wonderful journey. You will meet so many people that will treat you like a family member. And you will see amazing views that looks like they are unreal.
